What we were looking for
A wired home or small-office router and firewall appliance with standard interfaces, non-cloud-dependent software, replaceable storage or memory where practical, and a serviceable chassis.
Why the decision is still open
The candidate's value is owner control, standard networking, fanless serviceable hardware, and software choice. The case must establish firmware support, exact SKU stability, independent reliability, and the separate access-point boundary.
What prevents a clear pick
- Vendor-cloud lock-in, nonstandard storage or memory, unsupported firmware, thermal failure, and treating an all-in-one wireless mesh system as the same Form.
What a qualifying product must do
- Verify exact SKU, interface and thermal design, supported operating systems, firmware horizon, and independent use evidence.
What can go wrong
